Portarlington duo 900km into charity kayak trip around Ireland Portarlington kayak enthusiasts John Bolton (46) and Diane Cooper (30) decided earlier this year to kayak around Ireland to raise money for hospices in Offaly and Laois.

Now 25 days into their 40 day challenge, the two who run True Fitness in Tullamore, Portarlington and Portlaoise have covered some 900km of the journey that’s expected to be approximately 1,600km, or 1,000 miles.

Unanswered prayers as Garth gigs definitely off In a case of unanswered prayers for Garth Brooks and his fans alike, it was confirmed late last night (Monday) that none of the country music star’s planned five gigs in Croke Park will be going ahead later this month.

A statement from Aiken Promotions regarding the event said last night that “despite pursuing all possible solutions, the five concert Garth Brooks Comeback Special Event at Croke Park is cancelled”.

Birr's Eugene is latest Lotto winner Last Saturday was a great day for Birr’s Eugene Dolan, who won €17,000 at the National Lottery’s sixth Money Spinner event of the summer.

Presented by Brian Ormond, the Money Spinner event at the Bunratty Castle Hotel in Clare included players from Wexford, Limerick, Waterford, Cork and Offaly.

Killeigh post office opportunity re-advertised after no suitable applications first time around An Post have re-advertised an opportunity to head up a new post office in Killeigh, following a lack of suitable applications arising from a previous advertisement in May.

Joe and Bridget Plunkett are set to finish up the post service they’ve offered for years from the building in Killeigh they also call home at the end of this month.

An Post says it’s committed to getting a new contractor and facility in place in Killeigh as soon as possible, but has admitted this week the process will not now be a seamless one.

Concerned locals in Killeigh have formed a committee, and are fearful of losing the local service they say is much needed.
