I have made a submission to the Taoiseach, the Tanaiste, the Minister for Arts Heritage and the Gaeltacht, and the Minister for Foreign Affairs to the effect that the state should, in a formal way, on 18th September 2014, celebrate the centenary of the passage into law of the Irish Home Rule Bill on 18th September 1914. In legislative terms, this was an irreversible milestone in Irish history. For the first time since 1800, Irish legislative independence had been conceded by the UK. On 18th September 1914, Redmond achieved what neither O Connell, Butt nor Parnell did.
